The Old Dominion University Maritime Institute provides specialization for students in the maritime field, which includes shipping, ports and logistics management. A specialized concentration is integrated into both the existing Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, and is also available as electives in the Master of Arts in Economics In the fall of 2006, the institute began offering courses for the new undergraduate business major, Maritime and Supply Chain Management -- ODU is the second university in the U.S. to offer an undergraduate maritime business major.

The Craney Island Eastward Expansion represents thousands of jobs for the Hampton Roads area.

Throughout each phase of design, construction, and operation various opportunities will emerge.

Starting In 2010

In the future, during construction of the Craney Island Eastward Expansion project, there will be a high demand for a number of positions with construction contractors in the following construction fields:

Dredging
Earthwork
Heavy Marine
Ground Improvement
Port Construction
Aggregate Suppliers
Roadway

Starting 2020

Upon opening of the marine terminal in 2017, there will be additional employment opportunities estimated near 50,000 for the following positions:

Longshoreman
Truck Driver
Mechanic
Stevedore

Additional demand is anticipated to emerge in businesses tied to port related goods movement. The salary potential for such positions will range across the various sectors, but will commiserate with professional experience and responsibility level.
