Project Description
The Virginia Port Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are partnering to construct the Eastward Expansion of Craney Island. A project of dual purpose, the Craney Island Eastward Expansion will extend the life of Craney Island as a dredged material management area and provide land for construction of a new marine terminal.
Dike Construction
The first element of the project is construction of containment dikes to create a confined dredged material placement area. After the dikes are constructed, the site will be filled with dredged material from harbor dredging projects as well as material mined from the existing Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area (CIDMMA). Mining material from CIDMMA and placing new material in the eastward expansion will extend the life of Craney Island by 9 to 10 years.
Ground Improvements
After the eastward expansion is filled with dredged material, an extensive ground improvement program will be implemented to strengthen the soft marine clay that underlies the site as well as to strengthen the newly placed dredged material.
Marine Terminal
Once the ground improvement is completed on a section of the eastward expansion, then marine terminal construction will begin. The marine terminal build-out will occur in phases to meet cargo demand.
