The maritime industry is a dynamic source for numerous emerging job opportunities in a high growth, high demand, and economically vital sector of the Hampton Roads economy. As The Port of Virginia and the Hampton Roads maritime industry grows and expands, thousands of jobs will be created.

The Port of Virginia is a gateway of domestic and international trade. It powers cargo to markets across the nation as part of America’s ten largest and most successful cargo handling networks. Global trade and goods movement is one of Hampton Roads’ most vital industries in terms of job creation and economic activity. Employment in the maritime industry goes well beyond traditional waterfront labor. Today, it is a dynamic and increasingly technology-based sector that requires a diverse and skilled workforce. Jobs in the wide-ranging maritime industry include the service providers that are involved in handling and processing goods imported to and exported from Virginia—such as distribution center and warehouse workers, logistics professionals, and truck drivers. Stable, well-paying jobs related to Port operations are the backbone of Hampton Roads’ vibrant maritime economy.

Jobs Engine For the Commonwealth

The Craney Island Eastward Expansion and Marine Terminal will increase The Port’s capacity to handle containerized cargo, therefore increasing the number of jobs in Virginia generated from maritime commerce. The Craney Island Eastward Expansion Project is projected to produce more than 54,000 jobs across a number of sectors and disciplines, representing $1.7 billion in wages.

The Craney Island Eastward Expansion represents thousands of jobs for the Hampton Roads area. Throughout each phase of design, construction, and operation various opportunities will emerge. Starting In 2010, during construction of the Craney Island Eastward Expansion project, there will be a high demand for a number of positions with construction contractors in the following construction fields:

  • Dredging
  • Earthwork
  • Heavy Marine
  • Ground Improvement
  • Port Construction
  • Aggregate Suppliers
  • Roadway

Starting 2020 Upon opening of the marine terminal in 2017, there will be additional employment opportunities estimated near 50,000 for the following positions:
