Piping Plover Roson Seabed In Situ Testing System
Craney Island is location for the placement of dredged materials. It is operated by the U.S. Army Cops of Engineers. The Norfolk District of the Corps has worked for the creation, protection, and preservation of a critical habitat for birds such as the piping plover and other threatened or endangered species that use the island as a large nesting ground. Audubon Society members utilize the island as a favorite spot for bird watching.
Underground investigations for the Craney Island project began on June 30, 2007 with the 1st deployment of Fugro’s Roson seabed in situ testing system. Explorations conducted with the system have included cone penetration test soundings, T-bar soundings, and in situ vane shear tests soundings. More than 150 soundings were conducted, throughout the proposed eastern expansion area, to depths of 70 to 140 feet below bay bottom. The marine drilling program for the expansion area is scheduled to begin in August.

The Virginia Port Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are partnering to construct the Eastward Expansion of Craney Island.  A project of dual purpose, the Craney Island Eastward Expansion will effectively extend the life of Craney Island as a dredged material placement area, as well as, provide land for the construction of a new marine terminal.
