A project of dual purpose, the Craney Island Eastward Expansion will effectively extend the life of Craney Island as a dredged material placement area, as well as provide land for the construction of a new marine terminal. The purpose for the Craney Island Eastward Expansion emerges from the combined needs of the Corps and the VPA. Hampton Roads shipping and ship building industries, as well as the military, rely on Craney Island to handle dredged material resulting from regular maintenance dredging within Norfolk Harbor. These industries represent a large component of the regional economy. The Craney Island Eastward Expansion will allow Craney Island Dredged Material Management Area (CIDMMA), to accept dredged material well beyond 2025. Extending the life of Craney Island will ensure the channels in Hampton Roads remain clear, offering an economically efficient, reliable, and safe navigation system. In addition to providing additional life for CIDMMA, the eastward expansion will also meet The Port of Virginias need for expanded cargo capacity, by accommodating the construction of a marine terminal on top of the new cell.
